Norma Kamali graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1964 and established her fashion boutique in 1968 in New York City. Designers such as Anna Sui used to shop at Kamali's boutique when they were students living in New York. Kamali’s practical garments such as evening wear made from sweatshirt fleece, parachute jumpsuits and down jackets inspired by sleeping bags gained great popularity in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
