She's Anything But Vague

Posted by Clare Ferra on

We're obsessed with the @ShesVague instagram account.  The account is a mood board of everything flashy, trashy and OTT from the 2000's.

IRVRSBL is currently having a 00's moment and we've been revisiting many pieces from that era.  We decided a collaboration would be fitting, and we teamed up to release a curated collection of exxtra vintage pieces inspired by the She's Vague vision.

Here is our interview with She's Vague, about her inspirations and her vision.

Who is Shes Vague?

She's Vague is a bored wealthy housewife. Think F/W Versace ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel in 2000.

You've amassed an enormous following.  How did Shes Vague come about?

I started She's Vague after a breakup. I was beginning a new chapter in my life and I had no idea who I was, what I was doing or where I was going. She's Vague has

helped me discover my identity. It's given me an outlet to explore so many different aspects of fashion, women, art, beauty and life in general and still continues to.

What have been some of your highlights since beginning She's Vague?

I've met a lot of really wonderful and inspiring people through She's Vague which I'm so incredibly grateful for. Besides that, the best highlight was when Kim Kardashian followed me! It was an absolute dream come true. I'm still not over it and don't think I ever will be.

Your instagram has a distinct early 00's feel.  What is it about this era that inspires you the most?

I grew up in the 00's. It was such a carefree and simpler time that I miss so deeply. Not only am I inspired by low rise jeans, tramp stamps and belly chains, I am inspired by the overall women of that era. She knows what she wants, who she is and how she’s going to live her life. Whether she is a mother or a business woman she is empowered by her body, sexuality and womanhood. She has her flip phone in one hand, a Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami bag in the other and a slogan tee that says "I'm so hot I'm jealous of myself" How can you not be inspired?

Who are your style icons?

My style icons are Paris Hilton, Lil Kim, Pamela Anderson, The Spice Girls, Foxy Brown, Fran Fine, Eve and any girl on Myspace between 2007 and 2010.

Your feed has brought trends to the fore I thought I'd never see again.  I'm currently obsessing over newsboy caps and low rise jeans.  What styles would you like to see make a comeback?

I'd like to see whale tales, Playboy bunny belly rings, Baby Phat jeans and Dior monogram everything make a comeback!

Film and tv features quite a bit in your feed.  What shows and films are a point of reference for you?

Mean Girls, Charmed, The O.C, The Simple Life, Charlies Angels, The Hills, Bring It On, The Girls Next Door, The Anna Nicole Show, The Nanny, The Cheetah Girls, Thirteen, White Chicks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, SATC, Lizzie McGuire, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. There's so many the list could go on forever! These are the shows I grew up with, I idolised the women and admired the looks.

Your feed is full of women who are brazen and unapologetic about their sexuality.  What is it about this that appeals to you?

Promoting women’s empowerment in pop culture, fashion, art, film and entertainment is everything I am. The images and videos I post celebrate sexuality, freedom and individuality without being subject to objectification and dehumanization. I believe a woman can be intelligent and make her own informed decisions whilst still being a sex symbol. I want to challenge the repressive, unequal dominant culture and believe that each woman’s desires are her own and every woman has the right to express her gender and sexuality any way she chooses.
